“Roz” Mary Rosalyn Long, 72 years old, sadly passed away from Alzheimer’s disease on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2025. She was at Serenity Care in Lewiston, surrounded by her family.
Roz was born on Jan. 24, 1953, in Lewiston to Lynn and Helen Schwandt. She was the first of five siblings. Throughout her childhood, her family moved throughout the Pacific Northwest. Roz attended 12 schools growing up, eventually graduating in 1971 from Prairie High School in Cottonwood. She worked as a nurse aide at St. Mary’s Hospital, and a day after graduation, on June 4, married Mike Long. They traveled to North Carolina where Mike was stationed in the U.S. Air Force. Then, they were stationed at Williams Air Force Base in Chandler, Ariz., where their first child, Corey Michael, was born in 1974. They moved to Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, and then to Cottonwood in 1975. They settled there and had their second child, Brandy Michelle, in 1976.
Roz’s years in Cottonwood were spent raising her two children, helping run the car business with Mike, working at the Chronicle and Shopper newspapers, and JRU Well Drilling. She worked for the U.S. census three separate times, volunteered for the Jaycee’etts, Hospital Guild, Buggywhip Committee and many other community events. Roz was an expert seamstress and avid woodworker. She shared her many talents with the community, and more importantly her family. She sewed elegant dresses for proms and weddings, and clothing for family and friends, especially her grandkids. She also built furniture and toy boxes for all her grandkids. Roz made many trophies for the gun club, enjoyed home remodeling, and made beautiful decorations for her children’s weddings. There wasn’t anything she couldn’t do or create; her gifts and talents will be greatly missed.
In 2006, Mike and Roz moved to Lewiston where Roz continued working at the car business. She also learned to do crop insurance and continued to volunteer for the community doing taxes for the AARP. She eventually retired from working and volunteering around 2020.
Roz is survived by her husband Mike, of 54 years; son Corey (Rachel) Long; daughter Brandy (Matt) Fiorenza; grandchildren: Mariska and Mason Long, Dylan (Sage) and Spencer Fiorenza; great-granddaughter, Iris Fiorenza; brother Arlen (Diane) Schwandt; sister Robin (Jim) Schacher; many nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws, life-long friend Debbie Morris and pinochle partners of 50 years, Rod and Kathy Parsells.
Preceded in death are her parents: Lynn and Helen Schwandt; in-laws Ken and Ora Mae Long; brother Brian Schwandt; sister Sue McAllister; aunts and uncles, grandparents and close friend Judy Uhlorn.
The family would like to thank the staff at Serenity Place for the amazing care Roz received in her short time there. They became a second family and we will forever be grateful to them.
Malcom’s Brower-Wann Funeral Home of Lewiston is in charge of arrangements. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers; donations may be made to Alzheimer’s research in honor of Roz.
