Kenneth Nelson

2/21/1921 — 9/23/2018

Kenneth Karl Nelson, 77, passed away Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018.

Kenneth was born Feb. 21, 1941, in Chicago to Roy and Dorothy Nelson. Ken moved from Chicago to Hermantown, Minn., at age 5. He attended school in Hermantown and one year of college before joining the U.S. Army. He participated as an expert rifleman and traveled to competitions. He was transferred from Yuma, Ariz., to Ankara, Turkey, where he served for two years.

Upon returning to the states, Ken headed to California to be with his sister, Nancy. Once again, he enrolled in college. He also worked as a cook/chef in several restaurants in the Hollywood area before moving to San Diego. He was hired by the San Diego Trust and Savings Bank as a computer operator. Ken was eventually appointed first vice president, managing the data processing center.

Ken met Lysbeth Phillips at the computer center. She replaced him as the computer operator and he trained her for the position. They fell in love and were married in 1968. Ken adopted Lysbeth’s three children, and they added one more child to the mix in 1969. He was their beloved dad from Day One.

Ken and Lysbeth left San Diego 15 years ago to relocate in Lewiston. He absolutely loved living here and participated as member of Valley Christian Center. Ken was a “homebody;” he enjoyed reading and watching golf and football. He loved his family and holidays and seeing his children, grandchildren and great-grandchild. They were always a highlight of his life. Ken’s heart was held by God, family and country.

He is survived by his wife, Lysbeth Nelson of Lewiston; daughters Sonja Nelson and Britt Lee Nelson (Ned), both of Lewiston, and Kimberly Nelson of Montana; sons Clark Nelson (Shannon) of San Diego and Scott Nelson of Colorado; grandson Cheyne Nelson (Anna) of San Diego; and great-grandson Liam Lopardo of Lewiston.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Dorothy Nelson, and his sisters, Roberta, Nancy and Joyce.

A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Valley Christian Center of Lewiston with a reception to follow.
