Carol Jean (Evans) Wilson was born Nov. 19, 1917, in Lewiston. She passed away peacefully Friday, Sept. 12, 2014, at TenderCare Homes in Clarkston. She was the second child of Dora and Roy Evans. She grew up in Modesto, Calif., and attended Modesto Junior College. She graduated from Colorado College of Education in Greeley, Colo., where she met Jeff Wilson. Jeff and Carol were married Dec. 22, 1940, in Albuquerque, N.M.
During World War II, Carol served as editor of The Farrugut News, the largest military base newspaper in the country. During the war, their first child, Mark, was born. Following the war they lived in Estancia, N.M., where son Curt was born; Blue Springs, Mo., where daughter Barbara was born; and Wilma, Wash., where son Scott was born. In 1958 they moved to Lapwai, where they lived for 23 years.
While in Lapwai, Carol was highly involved in the community. Jeff coached football for 23 years, and Carol missed only one game during that time. She taught English, government, journalism and debate at Lapwai and Lewiston high schools. Carol was the yearbook adviser in Lapwai for many years.
Carol also served as a local correspondent for the Lewiston Morning Tribune, writing many feature articles about local history and longtime residents of the Lapwai Valley. She was an active member of the Valley Presbyterian Church in Lapwai. Her passion for local history led to her appointment to the Lewis and Clark Trail Commission for the state of Washington in 1984. She was involved with the local historical society for many years.
After retirement, Jeff and Carol built a home above the Port of Wilma on land that her grandparents homesteaded. There, they displayed many photographs and memorabilia of early life on the river collected by family members.
Carol and Jeff enjoyed traveling after their retirement. They towed their trailer to New England, New Mexico, California and numerous family camping trips on the Selway River. They went to England to visit Curt and to Ecuador to visit Scott.
Carol loved a good Scrabble game and enjoyed teaching her grandchildren to play. She was a creative person, making wonderful felt ornaments, writing poems and family history, and refinishing antique furniture. She held many gatherings for family and friends at "The Ranch," where she enjoyed landscaping with native plants and river stones.
Carol was preceded in death by Jeff in 2004. Her brothers, Maurice and Tommy, passed away in young adulthood.
She leaves behind her four children, Mark (Gwen), Curt (Cathy), Barb (Doug), and Scott (Betsy); 11 grandchildren, Kim (Lenny), Shannon (Brian), Michael (Renee), Angela (Shaun), Brian, Claire, Bob, Ben (Katherine), Sarah, Andrew (Elisa) and Rachel; and nine great-grandchildren, Nicole, Will, Justin, Owen, Anna, Dylan, Evan, Jacob and Alyson. She had one first cousin, Gwynne Brodsky.
Carol's family is grateful for the excellent care she received at TenderCare Homes prior to her death.
A private burial will take place on Thursday. A memorial service will be held at a later date, with arrangements made through Malcolm's Brower-Wann Funeral Home in Lewiston.
