Carl F. De Vault Sr. passed away peacefully Friday, June 2, 2017, at Prestige Care and Rehabilitation in Lewiston. Carl was born to Carolyn and Sam De Vault on Feb. 12, 1924, and he grew up in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley. He married the love of his life, Ella "Barb" Huckabye on Sept. 1, 1942. They had been married for 67 years when she passed away.

Carl served in the U.S. Army in World War II from 1943 to 1945, and was in the landing on Normandy Beach. He later lost a leg in France and returned home to Lewiston. There he worked with Elmer Braden at Orchard Shoe Shop to learn how to be a shoemaker. In 1954, he moved his family to Pendleton, Ore., and worked for Dale Brown Shoe Co. until 1957. He then went to work at Eastern Oregon State Hospital in the shoe shop and later became an instructor in the rehabilitation shop. Carl retired in 1974, and he and Barb moved back to Lewiston.

Carl was preceded in death by his wife; his mother and father; and brothers Dee and Earl De Vault. He is survived by three sisters, Audrey Evans and Charlotte Lane in Lewiston, and Arlis Woodland in McMinnville, Ore.; sons Carl Jr. (Jan) of Clarkston, Allen (Nancy) of Woodburn, Ore., and Jerry (Deena) of Lacey, Wash. He has several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He enjoyed cooking for church outings, camping, hunting and fishing in his earlier years.

A special thank you to Carl's sisters, Audrey and Charlotte, who spent so much time visiting him at Prestige. Also thank you to all those who so lovingly cared for him at Prestige for so many years.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. June 12, 2017, at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens, 3521 Seventh St., in the Lewiston Orchards. Dave Stanley will officiate, and a special military salute will take place.
