Alice Nau

In Loving Memory of Alice Nau

———

Alice Nau, born Feb. 11, 1927, to Homer and Amy Clements, peacefully passed away, surrounded by loved ones Monday, Dec. 25, 2023. Alice spent her formative years in Tahoe and Stites. During World War II, she moved to San Diego and worked as a Rosie the Riveter repairing war planes. She was proud of her efforts in supporting her country during the war. She later returned to Stites.

She was united in marriage with Lawrence Sotin on Dec. 18, 1947, establishing their home in Harpster and later Stites. Lawrence brought a son, Fred Sotin to the union. Alice and Lawrence were then blessed with a son, Larry and a daughter, Carla. Tragically, Lawrence died in 1953, leaving Alice to navigate the journey of life with strength and grace.

Not one to let sorrow define her, Alice found love again and married Vincent Nau on Dec. 26, 1958. Together, they crafted a life in Ferdinand, and welcomed their children, Greg, Mike, Shelli, Alica and Maria. Following Vincent’s passing in 1997, Alice moved to Deary and subsequently Lewiston, where she spent the last five years of her life.

Alice’s professional legacy included her role as a public-school teacher at St. Maurus Catholic School in Ferdinand. When the school closed its doors, she transitioned to Prairie Middle School in Cottonwood, where she taught and later became the librarian

Alice’s adventurous spirit led her to explore all 50 states and six of the seven continents. Her heart’s desire was to set foot on Antarctica, a dream she held onto with unwavering hope. Beyond her travels, Alice penned two books, “Aftermath” and “Into Your Hands.”

Until November of 2023, Alice maintained an active lifestyle, participating in water aerobics at the Asotin County Aquatic Center three days a week—a testament to her vitality and zest for life. She was proud to proclaim her 96 years of age.

While Alice’s professional achievements and globetrotting adventures were remarkable, she found her greatest source of pride in being called Mom, Grandma and GG (Great-Grandma). She deeply loved her family and cherished the bonds that tied them together.

She is survived by Larry and Sue Sotin of St. Maries, Greg and Wendy Nau and Mike and Susan Nau of Ferdinand, Carla Gallegos, Shelli and Bill Schumacher, and Alica and Roger Holthaus of Lewiston and Maria and Dean Gehring of Parker, Colo., and sister-in-law Margie Schmidt of Simi Valley, Calif. She also leaves behind 18 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Alice Nau was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence Sotin, husband Vincent Nau, her parents Homer and Amy Clements, her sister Betty Arguellas, her brother Nathan Clements, her son Fred Sotin, and her grandson Thomas Nau. Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. The family is forever grateful for the wonderful nursing care that Carla provided mom in her final years. We were blessed to have mom so many years, because we were blessed to have Carla.

A funeral service to celebrate Alice’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at Assumption Parish in Ferdinand. A rosary will precede the funeral, beginning at 10 a.m. The family invites friends, relatives and acquaintances to join them in honoring Alice’s remarkable life and offering support during this time of mourning.
