Vincent Thomas Stroops died Monday, April 28, 2014, at his Asotin home. He was 64.
Vince was born July 26, 1949, to Tom and Dora (Minahan) Stroops, in Coupeville, Wash. He graduated from University High School in Spokane in 1967, then attended the University of Idaho from 1967 through 1969. He married Claudia Kay Schwartzkopf Nov. 14, 1969, in Lewiston.
He went to work for Potlatch Forests Inc. in 1968. In 1971, he was elected treasurer of his Local Union No. 608 of the United Paperworkers. He was elected president in 1974, 1976 and again 1980 through 1985. On June 1, 1985, he went to work as a union representative for United Paperworkers International Union. Vince retired June 1, 2009. After retirement, he was an instructor in grievance and arbitration at the Grace Carroll Rocky Mountain Labor School. In 2011, he was awarded the Robert MacFarlane Award.
Vince was a member of Local Union No. 608, now the United Steel Workers, had been the Asotin County chairman of the Democratic Party in the early 1990s and again in 2011 and 2012. He enjoyed hang gliding with his friends at Ten Mile and Christmases at Grand Targhee, Wyo., skiing with his children and their friends.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Kay, at the family home; daughter and son-in-law Julie and Tom Wise of Spokane; granddaughter Allison Steahl of Asotin; son Brian and Jannae Stroops of Caldwell, Idaho; grandchildren Jacqueline, Thomas, Henry, Peter, Sam and Rachel, all of Caldwell; and sisters Patricia Stwodah of Farmville, Va., and Margaret Marshall of Sebastopol, Calif.
Vince was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Dora Stroops.
A celebration of life will be held July 26 at his 5 acres in Asotin.
