Robert Joseph Roberts succumbed to cancer Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014. He died at the home he designed and helped build in Lewiston, surrounded by his family. His house was a pride and joy that reflected his innate artistic capabilities.
Bob was born Feb. 26, 1932, at his paternal Lewiston home, to Mabel and William Roberts, the youngest of three children. His parents and siblings preceded him in death.
Bob attended Lewiston Normal School for his early education, and went on to Lewiston High School. His interest in, and talent for, all things mechanical surfaced early when, in his early teens, he became the town's mechanic for the Doodle-bugs - the scooter-like machines that were used in World War II and that became available for use in civilian life after the war. He continued that interest throughout his life, able and willing to fix anything for anyone.
He joined the National Guard, and subsequently the U.S. Army in 1951, serving as an aircraft engine mechanic in Texas, Colorado and California. He was discharged in November 1952. He returned to Lewiston and attended Lewis-Clark State College for a brief time while working in various jobs until he purchased a Richfield Oil gas station in 1953. He married Latricia Comnick in November 1955. They had two children, Kim and Kristy, both of Lewiston, who survive him. Bob sold Roberts Richfield and turned his interest to farming at the Comnick family farm properties. He went back to school at the University of Idaho, graduating with a teaching degree in 1966. Bob then began his new career as an industrial arts teacher at Lapwai High School. His wife preceded him in death in 1983.
In 1986, he married Jean Trodahl, who survives him. He retired from teaching in 1991. He continued to help with the farming. He and Jean had opportunities to travel to Europe, New Zealand and around the states, often with Bob finding wonderful "deals" at garage sales that he could take home and fix up. His interest in all things structural and mechanical kept him busy throughout his life.
In addition to his wife and children, Bob is survived by two special grandchildren, Renee and Chad; and numerous nephews, nieces, in-laws and many friends who will miss the kind and pleasant nature that permeated his life. We are grateful that he is now at peace.
