Patricia Jane Mathews, Ch’mt’le, “Far Side From Here,” completed her life’s journey and went home to the Creator on Thursday, July 25, 2024.
Patricia “Pat” was born Sept. 20, 1949, to Jesse Mathews (Spokane) and Melinda Mathews (Nezperce) in Brewster, Wash. She was a proud enrolled member of the Spokane Tribe, went to Chilocco Indian School and would go on to attend Laney College in Oakland, Calif.
Those who knew Pat expected nothing less than her witty and sarcastic sense of humor. She lived a fulfilling life, accomplished many wonderful and great things, and to her grandchildren, was a firecracker personality and always up for an adventure. She worked at the East Oakland Switchboard, a non-profit organization in Oakland, Calif., and at the Clearwater River Casino, in bingo. And although short in stature, Pat last worked in security at the Clearwater River Casino, before retiring. Pat loved to golf, was a dedicated consumer and collector of Coca-Cola products, loved elephants and butterflies, and won many Halloween costume contests, most notably, when she dressed in a costume as the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Pat was also just as creative and artistic in scrapbooking, and she took pride in decorating the walls of her home with pictures, top to bottom. She enjoyed nights at PK’s, spending time with her grandchildren in the Pacific Northwest and traveling to her favorite destination, Waikiki Beach in Honolulu.
Pat will be loved and missed by many, and the family would like to thank the staff at Royal Plaza Retirement Living, hospice services and others who helped care for her.
A memorial service with lunch to follow will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Pi-Nee-Waus Community Center, 504 Main St. S., Lapwai, with Jeff Guillory officiating.
