Kayla Vines

Kayla Vines

1/19/1994 — 11/14/2014

Kayla Marie Vines was granted her angel wings Friday, Nov. 14, 2014, following a lifelong illness. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends who Kayla had touched in many ways throughout her very memorable life.

Born Jan. 19, 1994, to Lisa A. Vines and John D. Gorset, Kayla's life would seem too short to many, but those who were touched by her understood that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives. Her contagious smile could melt the hearts of those around her and though she never spoke a word in her later years, her voice and thoughts could always be heard.

Kayla was diagnosed with Hurler's syndrome at 18 months of age, and although her illness made her appear frail, she possessed strength, perseverance and an ability to overcome incredible odds and physical challenges. With her courage she taught us that each day is a blessing and an opportunity to create lasting memories. She thoroughly enjoyed music, collecting watches and watching Barney and Elmo. She loved her interactions with her classmates and school staff at McGhee Elementary School during the years she was able to attend, and was always delighted by visits in her home with those she loved.

With Kayla's passing, we remember that her life is one to be celebrated. Although we will miss her every day, especially her winning smile, she will forever remain in our hearts. Through her teachings about life, wonderful memories were created with all who knew her and those memories will be cherished forever.

Kayla is survived by her loving mother, Lisa Vines; her loving grandmother, Kathy Vines; aunt Babs Mill; and cousins Benjamin and Chad Mill, all of Lewiston; and aunts Julie (Kent) John and Laurie (Scott) Carter of Lake Oswego, Ore., and Rita Bartlet of Spokane.

She was preceded in death by her father, John D. Gorset; and her grandmother, Darlene Gorset-Meyers.

There will be a celebration of life at 10:45 a.m. Sunday at the Faith Bible Church, at 514 Warner Ave., Lewiston.

Donations may be made to the National Mucopolysaccharidoses Society, P.O. Box 14686, Durham, NC 27709-4686.
