Joanne Sargeant, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to all she met, passed away Sunday, April 10, 2016, in Scottsdale, Ariz., with her family at her side.
Our only comfort is knowing that we will see her again and that is she is in our hearts forever. She made the world a better place for all who knew her.
Joanne was born with her identical twin, Alice, on April 26, 1930, to William and Marie Parrish in Lauratown, Ark. She has a surviving brother, Bill Parrish of San Francisco.
Joanne married Milton Copeland on Dec. 23, 1948, in Yuma, Ariz. They had one child, William Andrew Copeland. They divorced in 1953.
On June 18, 1954, she married Wilbur Russell Sargeant in Coeur d'Alene. Together they raised six children in Asotin, Andy Copeland (Shirley) of Spokane, Russell (Sue) of Banning, Calif., Deborah (Doug) of Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada, Michael (Kathy) of Las Vegas and James (JoDella) of Clarkston. Joanne had 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur, after 45 years of marriage; a son, Robert, who passed away in 1977; her parents; and by her identical twin sister, Alice Mainguy, in 1993.
Joanne worked for the Asotin school as the head cook. We'll always remember her famous cinnamon buns. She helped raise a lot of kids. She had a beautiful smile and a quick wit.
She was a member of the Asotin United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Asotin Eastern Star Vineland Chapter 84 OES, where she held all offices. Joanne was a blessing to all who knew her.
Viewing will be from noon until 5 p.m. Friday at Malcom's Brower-Wann Funeral Home. A celebration of Joanne's life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Clarkston United Methodist Church, 1242 Highland Ave., with Randy Cox officiating. A graveside service will be at Vineland Cemetery. All are invited back to the church for a reception following.
In lieu of flowers, we ask to continue Mom's legacy of feeding children. Please donate to the Asotin County Food Bank Backpack for Kids program.

I want you to know that I always liked being around Joanne and remember her as a "mom" to all of us growing up. She will be missed and I pray God's grace and assurance of his love and eternal life will comfort you at this time.

We first met Joanne about 30 years ago when we purchased a home next door to she and Wilbur. Our 2nd child was born while living there and enjoyed "Wilbo" and "Weewan" as much as we did. We had only been there a few months when we were invited to a BBQ at Sargeant's. Little did we know that Joanne had arranged a potluck and invited every person within eyesight of our home to come and welcome us to the neighborhood. I'll never forget that kindness and have mentioned it to many people over the years. It was only one display of Joanne's wonderful hospitality. If hospitality is a gifting, then we presume Joanne went through the line twice when God dispensed gifts! We had many great conversations and wonderful dinners at her home. I will always remember how proud she was of her children and grandchildren....and how kind she was to mine. She quit referring to me by my first name and almost always started our conversations with something like, "what are you up to Ornery?" We usually spent half the discussion passing wisecracks back and forth...I don't think I ever came out ahead! Our girls were sad to hear the news, but we will all remember her as a kind hearted, hard working, feisty and loving person. We're worse off and heaven is better off.

I would like to offer my sincere condolences for your loss. I hope the family will find some comfort and strength in Jesus promise of the earthly resurrection, when Jesus will restore life to the dead(Acts 24:15)and the renewed Paradise earth, where death will be no more and no family will mourn the death of a loved one.-Revelation 21:3,4;John 5:28,29;Luke 23:43. May GOD(Psalms 83:18)grant you peace and comfort now, during this grievous time.-Matthew 5:4.
