Herman Ewald Hinrichs was born Jan. 24, 1937, in Leland, to Edward "Ed" and Helen M. (Jones) Hinrichs, and passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016, at his Kendrick-area home.
He attended school in Leland until the family moved to Big Bear Ridge in 1949, where he continued his schooling in Kendrick. Due to the death of his father, Ed, in 1954, Herm left school just shy of graduating to assume the full farming operations and responsibilities at home. His classmates awarded him a graduation certificate at a later class reunion of Kendrick High School, an honor he greatly appreciated.
Herm's 60-plus-year farming career began at the age of 5, when he jumped on the "Cat" and took off for the fields. In addition to farming, Herm raised herds of up to 80 head of cattle before selling the stock in the late '70s.
Herm loved the farming life, as well as hunting, fly fishing and trap shooting, earning a championship at the Camas Prairie Trap Shoot in Lewiston. He went on many outdoor excursions with his good friend, Eddie Galloway. Herm was also a member and a past director of the Kendrick-Rochdale grain elevator.
Steve Emmett, a close friend and neighbor, was invaluable as he saw to not only the farm operations during Herm's illness, but endeavored to ensure Randy was always aware of all aspects of Herm's personal care. There are no words to adequately express appreciation for that gift of friendship.
Thanks also to Herm's neighbors and friends Dareld Hazeltine and Leland Slind, and caregivers Jan, Alice, Cathy and Dixie.
Herm was predeceased by his parents, Ed and Helen; grandparents Alexander and Allie Larson; and uncles Homer, Paul and Ray E. Jones. He is survived by cousins Larry Jones and Randy (Renee) Jones, and their families.
Viewing will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Malcom's Brower-Wann Funeral Home, 1711 18th St., Lewiston. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Bethany Memorial Chapel near Kendrick.
