Freida J. Ellenwood flew away to God’s celestial shore Thursday, Dec. 14, 2023. She was born Oct. 9, 1938, in Kamiah, to Rose McConville and Edward Hayes. She would be the 7th born of 8 children between them.
Freida grew up in Kamiah up until 1st grade, when she would move with her father and siblings to Vancouver, Wash. She attended school there until the summer before 8th grade when the family returned to Kamiah and she would graduate from high school in 1956.
She married Richard Marcus Ellenwood June 8, 1958. They had five children.
She worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Nez Perce Tribe’s Social Services Department for most of her life. She officially retired in August of 2021.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rose and Ed; siblings, Marleita, Helen, Mary, Clara Jean, Ernestine, Charles “Pete” and Vivian; and children, Marcus, Richard “Guy” and Randall Vernon Ellenwood.
She is survived by her children, Charles Ellenwood, of Lapwai, and Mollie Cline (Tom) of Everson, Wash.; grandchildren, Paula Ellenwood, Rachel C. Ellenwood, Raleigh Ellenwood, Louis Harris, LaVeda Lara, Alex Ellenwood, Loraine Harris, Naomi Ellenwood, Michael Wilson Jr and Carol Ellenwood; 23 great-grandchildren; and expecting the first great-great grandchild in February.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 18, with a non-denomination memorial service and at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 19, with Christian church services. Dinner and small giveaway to follow.
