Ezekiel Zebulon "Zeb" Fisher passed away approximately Monday, Oct. 23, 2017, from as-yet-unknown causes in a wooded area near the Memorial Bridge in Lewiston. He was born July 2, 1977, in Cherryville, N.C., son of James Wesley Fisher Jr. and Hanni Marie Hallen. His first birthday was celebrated in Elk City, where he lived until 1983, when he started first grade at Webster School in Lewiston. He lived in Pullman from 1987 to 1990 before moving to Clarkston. He spent time between his mother's home in Clarkston and his father's home in White Bird.
Zeb struggled with bipolar disorder, which led to drug addiction. He graduated from Clarkston's Charles Francis Adams High School in 1995. He joined the U.S. Navy, and one week before reporting for duty on his 18th birthday he went into a diabetic coma. He went to live with his father, James W. Fisher, in Cherryville, where he received an associate degree in science at Gaston College in May 1999. He was a chemical engineering student at North Carolina State University. Zeb was brilliant - almost a straight-A student - in everything related to science and math.
Along with Dawn Cosner, he became clean and sober for more than four years. He attended River City Church and Bethabara and was active at Community On Call. He also attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings regularly. On June 14, 2007, he married Dawn Cosner, and he leaves behind three stepchildren he dearly loved - Kyla, Breanna and Mateo Cosner.
Zeb attended Lewis-Clark State College and added art to his list of passions. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry in May 2008 and was doing post-graduate studies in nanotechnology at Rice University in Houston in 2009 when bipolar disorder/schizophrenic tendencies once again disabled him.
Zeb loved the outdoors. In his younger years, he went skiing and snowboarding in the winter and was a passionate fisherman the rest of the year. In later years he especially loved steelhead and sturgeon fishing. He also loved hunting and Frisbee golf. Most of all he loved people, talking to anyone anywhere who would listen to him.
Zeb fought mental illness, diabetes and drug addiction most of his life. The way "rational" people think about things was a mystery to him, just as much as the way he thought about things is a mystery to all who knew him. At this point, it is not certain how Zeb died, but it was probably related to his diabetes and mental illness. Zeb was a loving soul who put his relationships with others above material possessions. In spite of all his troubles in life, he would give anything to anyone who asked it from him. Many remember him for his smile, which came from his whole being. In his memory, I think he would ask for acts of kindness toward the homeless, especially those who are mentally ill.
He is survived by his father, Jim Fisher of Santee, S.C.; stepfather Rollie Hallen of Lewiston; mother Hanni Hallen of Lewiston; brother Zach Hagler of Clarkston; half-sister Misty Toney of New Orleans; grandmother Phyllis Fisher of Annadale, Va.; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Everyone is welcome to a memorial service at 11 a.m. Nov. 18 at River City Church, with a covered-dish dinner to follow. If anyone would like to bring food, please contact Madison at River City Church.
