Born on New Year's Day in Astoria, Ore., to William and Lutie Dawson, she and her sister, Donna, grew up on the family dairy farm in Skamokawa, Wash.
She went on to graduate from Washington State University in 1942; her dream was to teach home economics, leaving after one year to marry Kendry Gimlin on June 12, 1943, in Pullman. They operated the Gimlin family farm before moving to the Tammany area, later moving to Culdesac.
Kendry and Ellen began downsizing when they moved to Anatone before semi-retiring to the Clarkston Heights. Kendry passed away in 1983 after 40 years of marriage.
She was active as a 4-H leader for more than 40 years, enjoying helping youth with home economics projects. She was a member of American Cowbells, having served as Idaho's state president. She and Kendry were active in the cattle industry, and Ellen worked for many years as a clerk at Spencer Livestock. In later years, she worked at a Hallmark store.
She married Wayne Keatts of Lewiston in 1986, with him passing in 2010. They took great joy in raising roses and traveling the USA.
She is survived by two daughters, Vicki (Larry) Ashley of Maupin, Ore., and Barbara (Tom) Appleford of Anatone; one son, Richard (Mikki) Gimlin of Quincy, Wash.; one stepson, Randy (LeAnn) Keatts of Lewiston; grandchildren Cody (Nikki) Appleford, Cory (Michele) Appleford, Chance (Ariel) Appleford, Justin (Jody) Gimlin, Amanda (Jeremy) Vasquez and Andrea (Enrique) Lopez; stepgrandchildren Larry (Monica) Keatts; great-grandchildren Allie, Bailey, Kinzey, Payten and Porter, Paxton, Ava, Micayla, Kendry, Jack and Cohen; and stepgreat-grandson Cole.
