Daniel Elijah Jolliff, 82, passed away Friday, Dec. 4, 2015, at Prestige Care and Rehabilitation in Lewiston. He battled the last years of his life with worsening heart problems and dementia. He will be missed very much, and his warm smile and gracious soul will never be forgotten from our hearts.
Dan was born Feb. 24, 1933, to Alma and Elijah Jolliff. He was one of seven children in the family and grew up here in Lewiston, where he attended Lewiston High School. Out of high school, Dan joined the U.S. Navy, entered the U.S. Marines and fought in the Korean War. Later he re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.
On this return to Lewiston, he married Darlene Ruth Thomas on Dec. 11, 1958. They then moved for a time to Patrick Air Force Base in Florida, where Dan specialized in cryptograph repair. In Florida their first child, Dennis, was born. Afterward, the family was stationed at the Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany for three years. All this totaled 11 years serving his country before Dan and his family moved back home to Lewiston. Shortly after returning home, their daughter, Dixie, was born.
In 1968, Dan moved the family to Portland, Ore., for 17 years, where he excelled as a car salesman. It was only a matter of time before he found himself again in Lewiston in 1985, where Dan worked as a salesman and manager at Deranleau's, then Sears. He would eventually retire from sales in order to fish, play with his grandkids and cheer on the Mariners and
Seahawks.
Dan loved his family. He always found a way to make everyone around him smile, which is a trait he passed to his kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His grandkids brought him the most pleasure throughout his life.
Daniel Elijah Jolliff was preceded in death by his brothers, Vernon Jolly, Leonard "Dude" Meisner, Melvin Meisner; and his sisters, Carol Harlow and Pinea Burden.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene Jolliff; brother Dale Jolliff; sisters-in-law Polly Meisner and Tena Burns; brothers-in-law Vic Thomas and Craig Thomas; son Dennis Jolliff; daughter-in-law Melissa Jolliff; daughter Dixie Jolliff; grandchildren Danny Jolliff, Samantha Jolliff and Cody Jenson; and great-grandchildren Lillie, Lila Jane, Tara and Aiden.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Normal Hill Cemetery.
