Bernie Martin Comer was born July 24, 1923, and died Thursday, March 26, 2015, at age 91.
He was born in Philadelphia to Benjamin and Celia Comer, who arrived here in the United States around 1904 from Russia. His known siblings were James, born 1910; Minnie, born 1912; Lilly, born 1915; and Nathan, born 1920. He leaves behind his best friend and caretaker, Sherri; his daughter, Celia; and two grandsons, Jake and Caleb.
He attended Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946, and then spent the next 60 years amusing himself and entertaining us with swinging style while singing, playing trumpet and then piano to jazzy tunes. His extensive repertoire included elegant and leading showrooms, nightclubs and even a "gig" with Frank Sinatra, in places such as Colorado, Texas, Montana, Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas and Reno, Nev., to name a few. He was very proud to have settled down for 20 of those years entertaining you at Disney World's Polynesian Hotel, where he retired. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Kansas with his wife, Josie, to her family homestead. This new chapter of life let him travel abroad, working major cruise ship lines while she served the local tribal council and tended family matters. He finally and officially retired and spent about 10 years on the homestead.
After Josie's passing and when his own health started to decline, he decided to move closer to his loved ones. He spent his last year in Clarkston, with his best friend and longtime love, Sherri.
Let this notice be a memorial to generations come and gone, to my children who hadn't had a chance to know their grandfather and to those who are still around who appreciate the "oldies but goodies."
