God reached down Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017, and said to Barbara Jo Spurgeon, 95, "Come with me, my good and faithful servant."
Feb. 14 was a day to celebrate in 1921; not only was it Valentine's Day, but the day that Mom was born to Lloyd and Eleanor Kunkle (Theobald) in Fort Collins, Colo. Later, she was joined by her younger brother, Frank (deceased).
Mom and Dad (Guy O. Spurgeon, deceased) were married Aug. 31, 1941, in Berkeley, Calif., after a brief courtship. The couple then moved to Vallejo, Calif., and then to Susanville, Calif., where all three of us kids were born - Jerry (deceased), Judy and then the youngest, Stephnay. In 1953, the family made their final move to Lewiston, where mom and dad built the house that was going to be our home full of love and laughter and many good memories. Mom continued to live there until she moved to Orchards Rehabilitation and Care Center in Lewiston in 2011; her final earthly home.
Many days were spent working in the garden. Later, we would harvest and can the plentiful fruits and vegetables that the family raised for those long winter months. For my dad, it was deer and elk hunts in the Weippe area that continuously put food on the table.
In the late 1980s, mom went to work as the secretary for our church, Congregational-Presbyterian Church in Lewiston. Mom retired prior to dad's death (March 1993) to take care of him during his final days.
Her greatest pleasure in life was her computer. She would spend hours using her skills to record music and get yummy recipes. While she surfed the internet, she would always find a good story, joke or picture to pass on to friends and family.
Barbara is survived by daughters Judy Roberts (Gary) of Spokane and Stephnay Gossage (Clyde) of Lewiston; half-sisters Lynn Bloomer of Lincoln, Neb., and Dorothy Kunkle of Florida; grandsons Robin Roberts, Robert Riggers, Arnold Gossage, Mike Riggers, Roger Gossage and Dale Roberts; granddaughters Theresa Gilbert and Kristie Molna (of British Columbia, Canada); 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and a great-great-granddaughter expected in June.
Besides her parents, brother, husband and son, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Stevie Spurgeon; granddaughter Holly Roberts; and great-great-grandson Jordan Gossage.
A celebration of Barbara Jo's life will be held at 11 a.m. April 22 at the Congregational-Presbyterian Church, 709 Sixth St., Lewiston, with a light luncheon to follow.
In lieu of flowers, Barbara requested that donations be made to the Youth Ministry of the Congregational-Presbyterian Church.
