On Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, Barbara Lynn (Cox) Kauffman, age 63, passed away in her home, surrounded by loved ones after losing a courageous battle with cancer. In 1998 came her diagnosis of breast cancer, followed by 15 years in remission, and the receipt of her devastating pancreatic cancer diagnosis in June 2013.
Barb was born May 24, 1951, in Lewiston. She lived the first year of her life in Pierce with her parents, Virginia and Gene Cox. In 1952, the family moved to Lewiston, where she attended all 12 years of school, graduating in 1969. In 1968 she married James K. Light, and together they had three children, Cori, Kristi and Ryan. After 17 years of marriage, they divorced. She and David B. Kauffman were married in 1986 and had one daughter, Kylie. Barb was a wonderful wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend to those of us who remain, and we miss her so much already.
Barb had many interests and joys over the years. Her activities included snowmobiling, camping, huckleberry and mushroom picking, swing dancing, bowling, bingo and playing cards. She was an amazing seamstress. Even while enduring this last battle with cancer, she was able to create her granddaughter Karly's wedding dress, which she was very proud of. She truly loved sewing for her family, singing, going to the movies, shopping on QVC, her cats and the color red! She was an active member in the Lewiston Civic Theatre, Sweet Adelines, and NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). In 2000, Barb joined Emanuel Baptist Church with her good friend, Norma, where she found the Lord as her savior. She was evermore a faithful follower and loved to listen to Christian music. However, her all-time favorite singer was Marie Osmond, whom she got the joy of meeting one day. She also enjoyed attending her breast cancer support group meetings and going to her 1969 high school class reunions to keep in touch with old friends. One most certainly would describe her as a people person with a great big heart.
The majority of her life was spent as a homemaker, which included the most rewarding job of all ... raising her children and, in recent years, her granddaughter, Addison. She was employed by both Paulucci's and the Crystal Thimble as a seamstress for alterations, Imperial Lanes, Shopko and Walmart.
She is survived by her husband, Dave; children Cori and Brian Cleveland, Kristi and Scott Beeler of Houston, Ryan and Kerry Light, and Kylie Kauffman; mother Virginia Farrell; father Leslie Gene Cox; father and mother-in-law Bill and Bonnie Kauffman; brother Gary (Sam) and Dona Cox; brothers-in-law Neil and Glenn Kauffman of Moscow and Doug and Delores Kauffman of Spokane; nieces Amy Albright, Kari Bake, Kira and Amy Kauffman; grandchildren Karly and Skyler Mauhar, Hunter and Trevor Robins, Cheyenne and Zayne Cleveland, Andrew and Zach Light and Addison Kauffman; great-grandchildren Adien Robins and Mischa and Haleigh Mauhar; and aunts, uncles, cousins and many, many friends.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Debra L. Cox.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Gina Quesenberry Foundation. Viewing and visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Friday at Malcom's Brower Wann Funeral Home, 1711 18th St., Lewiston. Graveside services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens in the Lewiston Orchards, followed by a celebration of life at noon at Emanuel Baptist Church, 2200 11th Ave., Lewiston.
