Alfred (Al) Francis Schmitt, 86, with his family by his side, peacefully left this world into the welcoming arms of Jesus on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2015, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, after a brief bout of pneumonia.
Alfred was born to Alfons and Hildegard Schmitt on Oct. 31, 1928, on the family farm in Kinsley, Kan., where he grew up with four brothers and two sisters. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, served for two years, and was then honorably discharged and returned to the family home in Kinsley. He married Peggy Mize in 1957. They had a son, Mark Schmitt, in 1958. The couple later divorced. He married Kay Adkins in April 1980; they remained married until his death.
Al packed a lot of life in his 86 years. Soon after marrying Peggy they moved to Riverside, Calif., where he and his cousin, Jim, started up a successful welding shop. He later bought a ranch in Clearwater, where he raised cattle, hay grain and made wonderful memories.
In 1980, after he married Kay, they made a home in Lewiston and he worked for Bi-State Siding and Window. He pursued his jack-of-all-trades nature until he started Al's Appliance, an appliance repair business that he ran out of his large shop behind the house until his retirement. But he never really retired - just slowed down some. He loved to "tinker around." There was no problem that he wouldn't tackle. He was fearless.
He loved to visit and spend time with family, friends, and especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing cribbage with his buddies and was a member of All Family Catholic Church.
Al is survived by his wife, Kay; son Mark (Patti); two stepsons, Mike and John Adkins; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and three brothers and two sisters.
His parents; a stepson, Ralph Hinton; and brother Harold, preceded him in death.
A memorial service is planned at 11 a.m. Thursday at Malcom's Brower-Wann Funeral Home in Lewiston. A covered-dish reception is planned immediately following at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post on Warner Avenue. All are invited.
